Put the light on their face.
Whenever possible, position your pet facing a window or another soft source of light. Light coming toward their face helps reveal their eyes, expression, and fur.
Before you move the camera, try moving your companion. A small change in position can make a big difference.

Don't let the window become brighter than your pet.
A bright window behind your companion can leave their face dark because your phone is trying to expose for the much brighter background.
If you have to photograph against the window, tap on your pet's face and raise the exposure slightly. Better yet, turn them toward the light.

Change your position.
Most people photograph their pets from standing height. Try something different. Kneel, sit, or get down on the floor.
Bring your phone approximately to your companion's eye level. You're no longer looking down at them. You're seeing the world with them.

That's where the personality lives.
When you're ready to take the photograph, tap on your pet's eye so your phone knows what matters most.
Then wait. A curious look, a head tilt, ears forward, or a quiet moment can tell you far more than a perfect pose.

Don't make them perform for the camera.
Forget 'sit.' Forget 'stay.' Sometimes let them sniff, explore, stretch, play, look away, or shake.
Those little behaviors are often what you'll remember most.

The photograph might happen between the photographs.
Watch your companion before you start shooting. Notice what they do naturally. Then be ready.
Take several frames when something interesting happens. The best photograph may be the one you didn't plan.
